Play under way on 8th day of Australian Open
Johanna Konta has become the first British woman to reach the fourth round at the Australian Open in 29 years. The last one was in Brisbane in the finals.
Muguruza finished with 32 unforced errors as she produced a disappointing display on her way to defeat by Strycova. Kerber beat fellow German Annika Beck in straight sets in the preceding match on Rod Laver Arena. Eventually, Azarenka held serve and found herself a game away at 5-3.
Konta can make a grand slam quarter-final for the first time, but must overcome a potentially tough contest versus Makarova first.
A succession of injuries over the past two years and a bout of depression have slowed the Belarussian, who clinched back-to-back titles at Melbourne Park in 2012-13.
Despite a sore throat, No. 4-seed Stan Wawrinka had no trouble with Czech Lukas Rosol on Saturday, rolling to a 6-2, 6-3, 7-6(3) victory in one hour and 55 minutes to set up a fourth round clash with Milos Raonic.
The early rounds – and even the latter stages – of mixed doubles at the Australian Open rarely draw attention.
She has a unique opportunity to reach for the first time in her career the quarter-finals at the Australian Open, which remains the only tournament of the Grand Slam in which she hasn’t reached the last 8. “I didn’t get to eat”, she said.
The five-time champion Djokovic and the pesky Simon played plenty of long rallies – the longest of which was 37 strokes. Despite having breaks in the second and third sets, Ivanovic lost six of the last seven games to lose 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 to No. 15-seeded Keys. That created Strycova’s first break point.
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) – An urgent medical situation had an impact on players on adjoining courts at the Australian Open when Nigel Sears, who is Ana Ivanovic’s coach and Andy Murray’s father-in-law, was rushed to a hospital while both third-round matches were in progress.
Australian Open organizers said they could not confirm the identity of the man due to privacy laws. Sears was undergoing tests but is understood to be conscious, talking and sitting up. He was carried out of the arena on a stretcher and taken to a hospital.
“It starts from zero, and I know what’s coming from her. I will try to be aggressive and try to go and win the match”.
Murray’s wife, Kim, is due to give birth to their first child next month.
And New Zealand’s Jade Lewis has lost in the second round of the junior girls’ singles in Melbourne.
Murray, though, beat Joao Sousa 6-2 3-6 6- 26-2. The American now leads the tournament in aces with 101 through three matches.
“She’s such a tough opponent”, Azarenka said of Strycova. He was dissecting the match in an on-court interview Sunday when a burst of laughter from the crowd caught his attention. This happened prior to the pre-match meeting and no further action wil be taken.
Kerber is into the final eight for the first time in nine attempts at the Australian Open and it follows a first-round loss here past year.
Strycova has only been past the third round once before in 38 Grand Slams, made a decision to stay in the moment after beating Mugurza, knowing her next rival was likely Azarenka.
Then comes the big match.
“I think my serve was not the best today”, said Kerber, 28.
Azarenka’s bid for a third Melbourne Park title continues against seventh seed Angelique Kerber. Maria Sharapova (5) faces the tricky Belinda Bencic (12), and Agnieszka Radwanska (4) is up against Anna-Lena Friedsam.
