Players brawl on pitch
Jason Anderson, the 36-year-old wicket-keeper was handed a life ban by his club for the fight on the field.
Having represented Bermuda 14 times, Anderson was wicketkeeping when he remonstrated with batsman O’Brien between overs. The match was however carried on after the fight and Jason Anderson was sent off the field.
As teammates began to converge across the duo, Anderson appeared to go much more berserk and launched a renewed assault on the batsman.
Anderson was found guilty of assaulting another player, a level four code of conduct breach, and was banned for life by the Bermuda Cricket Board.
It was a cricket match celebrated as a “community event”, but it turned into “a repugnant incident of violence, lawlessness and unsportsmanlike conduct” and led to a player being banned for life.
Large number of officials rushed to the field to separate the two players.
“Once I saw those two going at it, that’s when I decided to jump into the middle and try to break it up; me and Aaron Adams”. O’Brien, who charged of a Level 3 Breach was handed a 6-month ban.
O’Brien has been banned for six 50-over matches for his part in the incident.
Douglas said Adams, who had tried to intervene, had taken a blow to the head during the brawl and couldn’t remember the game.
Cleveland County skipper Allan Douglas said he was not able to figure out the reason for the brawl.
The Cleveland club has apologized on behalf of Anderson, news.com.au reported late Monday, as well as publicly stated that they urged the gloveman to seek anger management counseling.
However, the match resumed and Cleveland won the game by 72 runs.
