PlayStation VR Headset: Price and Release Date Leaked
Sony quickly responded to price leak on Amazon, saying – “This was an error by Amazon, we haven’t announced the price for PlayStation VR”.
In case you’re still struggling to catch up with all the ongoing VR buzz, company Oculus released pre-orders for its Rift VR headset on January 6th, and everyone went a bit insane.
Multiple Swiss websites are listing the headset for between €450-500, which works out at around S$780. It falls within the promised “price of a new console” range, but many also assumed that Sony was going to light up the Oculus Rift with a substantially lower price.
If we believe a recent report from a Swiss site, gamingbolt, the PlayStation’s VR headset should be available by the June this year.
Oculus still hasn’t revealed the price of the Oculus Touch or a solid release date, though, the motion-based controller’s release is expected to be at some point in the second half of 2016.
The Oculus Rift was recently confirmed to start at $600, and that’s without taking into account shipping and local taxes and import duty. £347 may also seem quite expensive to some interested about buying into VR for the first time, but compared to the Oculus price it may not be too bad. Even if they don’t, a PlayStation 4 is generally cheaper than a high-end gaming PC.
Virtual reality has been the highlight for tech and gaming in the past months as other players have entered into the VR industry.
I’m going to aim for the middle ground and guess that Sony has settled on a $499 price tag.
