PM for effective implementation of Montreal Protocol to preserve Ozone
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) celebrated on Wednesday the worldwide Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer which commemorates the 1987 signing of the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer.
He urged the global community to adopt the recommendations of Montreal Protocol. The ozone layer absorbs about 97 to 99 per cent of ultraviolet rays and also maintains the ozone-oxygen cycle.
Ahead of next weeks adoption in New York of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the effort by governments to forge a new, collective path forward on climate change later this year in Paris, the United Nations chief said the Montreal Protocols success should serve as inspiration.
Together, we have succeeded in putting the stratospheric ozone layer on the road to recovery by the middle of this century, Ban said. Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) have been used as replacements for many ozone-depleting substances.
As per expert estimates, GHG emissions have been reduced by more than 11 Giga tonnes Carbon dioxide equivalent per year through the ODS phase-out activities of the Montreal Protocol.
While countries and their decision makers are doing all they can to save the Ozone layer, now it is time when we should come forward for help.
Speakers of the function including Prof N Rajmohon said the first ozone hole was discovered over Antartica 30 years ago in May 1985.
A painting and model making competition was organized pertaining to Ozone Layer Protection, effects of Climate Change (Global Warming), pollution and life.
The ozone layer is the thin veil of atmosphere which protects the earth from harmful ultra-violet radiation.
Environmental Protection Minister Chen Jining has made the pledge at an event in Beijing to mark the worldwide Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer. The theme is supported by the slogan, “Ozone: All there is between you and UV“.
