Poe disqualified from 2016 presidential race
Grace Poe has been disqualified from 2016 Presidential Election – Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced the shocking news on Tuesday, December 1, 2015.
But in a television interview, Poe’s legal counsel George Garcia maintained that the senator was able to meet the residency requirement as she had been a Filipino resident ever since she returned to the Philippines from United States in May 2005.
The poll body division asserted that Poe became a resident only in July 2006 when she reacquired her Philippine citizenship under Republic Act 9225.
She recalled the embattled 2004 candidacy of her adoptive father, action star Ronald Allan Kelley Poe, alias Fernando Poe, Jr., whose presidential run was hounded by doubts on his citizenship as well. Share your thoughts and views on the comment section!
On Dec. 3, Poe’s camp is scheduled to submit its memorandums on the cases before the 1st Division, which is composed of Commissioners Christian Lim, Luie Guia, and Rowena Guanzon.
It stands in contrast to the Senate Electoral Tribunal’s November 17 vote in her favor on the issue of Ms. Poe’s status as a natural-born Filipino. “We will continue to fight for the right of foundlings and the fundamental right of the people to choose their leaders”, Poe said.
“The SET has spoken: Senator Poe is a natural-born Filipino citizen”, he said. “They show a lack of trust in the ability of Filipinos to make the right decision”.
The 34-page resolution stated that based on the Constitution and jurisprudence, Poe committed material misrepresentation when she filed her COC for president.
“We have legal remedies”.
“While this process is ongoing, Senator Grace Poe’s candidacy is pushing through!”, he also said.
“We haven’t seen the decision yet”, said presidential spokesman Edwin Lacierda, in a text message.
