Police Arrest 3 Men In Shooting Of Black Lives Matter Protesters
A night after a shooting near a Minneapolis protest that left five people injured, hundreds of demonstrators at the same site quietly milled around, sharing coffee, pizza and doughnuts, and stacking up firewood. More gunshots were heard on Tuesday night. Protesters then huddled in a circle for a moment of silence for Clark.
On Tuesday morning, police said they arrested two men in connection to the shooting. Police said three of the men are white and the fourth is Asian.
Scarsella lives in St. Paul and grew up in Lakeville, Minnesota, according to his Facebook page, where his cover photo is the one-starred “Bonnie Blue” flag often associated with the Confederacy.
Protesters have demanded investigators release video of the Clark shooting, and Ali noted it took more than a year before the city of Chicago on Tuesday released video of the fatal shooting of a 17-year-old.
NPR reports that police arrested one man early Tuesday afternoon.
“We ain’t going nowhere”, said Pastor Danny Givens Jr. of St. Paul, a clergy liaison to the Black Lives Matter movement. Clark’s family has asked for protesters to end the 4th Precinct encampment, out of concern for their safety, and U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison said it would be wise to “start thinking about an exit strategy” and what to do next.
Some protesters called the shooters white supremacists.
“And yes, we are locked and loaded”, he says, revealing a handgun.
Another rally is planned to mark the death of a Minneapolis man who was killed in a confrontation with police, despite pleas from some community members to avoid such actions on the day of his funeral.
“This is Black Powder Ranger”, he added, introducing the man in passenger seat, also dressed in camouflage and a keffiyeh hiding his face. He ends the video by saying “stay white”.
Local newspaperSun ThisWeek reported that “BlackPowderRanger” is Scarsella. Because the video has no audio track, it is hard to ascertain its content, but it shows what looks like the beginning of a scuffle after a tense exchange between protesters and the videographer. After what appears to be an argument, the video cuts to black. He was one of the five protesters shot Monday night. According to the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension – the state agency investigating the shooting – they have both been with the Minneapolis police for a little more than a year, and both have been officers for seven years.
Moallin [told an officer] they needed a squad vehicle and an ambulance.
“I’ve got one message for her”, he said.
The heightened security included “having security guards at entrances and requiring staff to show employee identification to enter”, city spokesman Casper Hill said.
“Six [officers] were outside [the precinct building]”, she continued. They were not making eye contact … “Like I don’t have too much time, but I know I have some type of objective on this earth”.
Andy King/AP NAACP Minneapolis President Nekima Levy-Pounds speaks during a vigil in front of the Minneapolis Police Department’s 4th Precinct, November 20, 2015. When they arrived, they were dressed in full riot gear, and reportedly maced people tending to the wounded.
“The idea that you would mace a group of people that just had bullets fired at them – that’s the opposite of responsible”, Bean added.
The Hennepin County Attorney’s Office said all four men are being held in jail and will remain jailed until at least Monday while prosecutors decide whether to charge them. They asked for and received the release of the officers’ names.
