Police arrest woman in deadly Tempe road rage shooting
A suspect has been arrested in connection to a deadly Arizona road rage shooting that left a Chinese exchange student dead and led to a chain-reaction crash that injured five others.
It started when two vehicles collided near Broadway Road and McClintock Drive at about 3:40 p.m., police said.
The gunshot victim was transported to a local hospital where she later died.
Jiang lost control of her vehicle because of her injuries and collided with a third auto that was carrying five passengers.
Police tracked down Davis after she fled from the scene.
Tempe police Lt. Michael Pooley said Sunday that 32-year-old Holly Davis has been booked on three charges including first-degree murder. Initial reports said the family was hospitalized as a precautionary measure. Their injuries are believed to be minor. She was later apprehended at a Mesa apartment she shares with her boyfriend.
The other driver was struck and then crashed into a third vehicle, police said.
Davis was positively identified after witnesses took down her license plate which matched the auto description that was given to police. Davis fled south on McClintock in a silver Volkswagen Passat, police said.
Arrests reports indicate that Davis had previously been convicted for resisting a lawful stop and fleeing in Missouri, and was subsequently sentenced to three years in prison.
Court paperwork suggests addiction and mental illness on the part of the defendant, attesting that Davis “expressed a desire to be shot by law enforcement”.
When officers interviewed Davis’ boyfriend, he allegedly told them he and Davis had been drunk earlier in the day. At this point, it is not clear if Davis was impaired at the time of the incident. She’s being charged with first-degree murder, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, disorderly conduct with a deadly weapon and prohibited possessing.
