Police Circulate Sketch Of A Suspect After Fatal Blast In Bangkok
“There have been minor bombs or just noise, but this time they aimed for innocent lives”, Prayuth said Tuesday. However, investigators have not been able to determine the nationality of the man or ascertain if he was still in Thailand, National Chief of Police Somyot Poompanmoung said Wednesday, according to Reuters. “There has to be Thai people helping this guy commit the act”.
But he revealed no other details.
The footage emerged two days after the attack on the Hindu Erawan shrine in central, downtown Bangkok.
Another 68 people remain in critical condition.
The warrant was issued after police released a sketch of the suspect.
“He had white skin and must have been a European or have mixed blood, perhaps with Middle Eastern blood”, Mr Prawut said, without giving a reason for his assumptions other than the colour of the man’s skin.
Authorities identified the suspect from a grainy security video that shows the man, wearing a yellow T-shirt and carrying a black backpack at the crowded shrine.
He casually placed the backpack underneath a bench and then slowly walked away clutching a blue plastic bag while looking at what appeared to be a smartphone. Police said the small device was thrown from a bridge.
Police said on Tuesday that the suspect, seen in closed-circuit TV footage, is a young man casually dressed with a backpack. “It’s a network. I believe there are some Thais involved”.
Police have offered a 1 million baht ($28,080) reward for information leading to his arrest.
The U.S. Embassy in Bangkok said it has not received reports of any Americans being affected by the bombing. “It’s a network”, said Somyot.
Singapore also confirmed one of its nationals was among those killed in the attack.
“From this incident, it is apparent that there are active individuals or groups that harbor the intention to damage Thailand, who may be pursuing political gain or other intentions by damaging the economy and tourism”, says Gen. Prayuth Chan Ocha, Thai Prime Minister.
“I’m still scared because you never know where [the perpetrators] will strike again”, 43-year-old Sommai Gazem said.
Meanwhile, security has been tightened in southern provinces especially in Koh Samui in Surat Thani, Hat Yai in Songkhla and Phuket which are key tourist destinations, an arny spokesman said.
Two of the confirmed fatalities were from China, and another two were from Hong Kong.
Twenty people were killed and more than 100 injured as a result of the attack on a popular tourist location in the center of the Thai capital.

Police believe the bomb was made up of 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds) of explosives and ball bearings.
