Police Discover Drug Tunnel From Mexico to the U.S.

Dozens of people have been arrested in Mexico on suspicion of helping him escape – all but one of them government officials. Mexican police arrested 16 people in Tijuana and seized 10 tons of pot, and San Diego sheriff’s deputies arrested four on this side.

Calexico police, CBP, and Department of Homeland Security are investigating the incident.

The 2,400ft tunnel connected warehouses in San Diego and Tijuana and included lighting, ventilation and a rail system for moving the drugs. “Just when they think theyre ready to move, we put it out of business. We continue to make good on our promise to relentlessly pursue and shutdown any tunnel as soon as it opens.”.

A subsequent search of the warehouse found the entrance of the tunnel in the floor.

Guzman, the world’s most wanted drug trafficker, escaped in July from a Mexican maximum security prison through a mile-long tunnel that surfaced right in his cell.

The Mexican Federal Police says the detainees have links to criminal groups operating in the Mexican state of Jalisco.

The drugs found were wrapped in 873 packages covered with plastic and tape. Laura Duffy said in a L.A. Times piece.

Federal authorities say a border inspector fatally shot a man wielding a knife at a Southern California crossing.

Isaias Enriquez-Acosta, 53, and Isidro Silva-Acosta, 27, were charged with unlawful conspiracy to import a controlled substance and conspiracy to use border tunnels and passages.

This organization was thought to be anchored in the state of Jalisco and in other parts in Central Mexico but not this far north along the border.
