Police don’t know if cops fired shots that injured officers

NEW YORK (AP) – Two New York City Police officers were injured early Saturday in a shootout with a suspect who crashed his auto into a police vehicle, police said.

Police Sources say the bullet recovered from Officer Yurkiw’s vest was from the suspect’s. “He suffered blunt force trauma”. The other was shot below the vest in the right hip, but neither injury is believed to be life-threatening.

The two officers, who are assigned to the plainclothes anti-crime in the 81st Precinct, were being treated at Kings County Hospital.

The suspect, identified as Jamal Funes, 34, was also struck multiple times and was listed in critical condition Saturday morning at Brookdale Hospital, Bratton said.

As News 12 has reported, Offficer William Reddin, of Lynbrook, and Officer Andrew Yurkiw, of Wantagh, were hospitalized early Saturday morning following a gunfight with a suspect in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn.

After the shootout, a. 357 magnum with five spent shell casings was reportedly found in the suspect’s vehicle. At the corner of Lexington Avenue and Malcolm X Boulevard, the suspect, who was driving the wrong way down the street, rammed a responding patrol auto from the 83rd Precinct, Bratton said.

The officers began to pursue Funes as they called in for assistance, according to police.

Yurkiw, an officer for three years, was hit in his bulletproof vest – 27 years after such a vest also saved his father, former Officer Paul Yurkiw. Multiple officers then fired at the armed driver.

De Blasio said that he and Bratton had the chance to visit with the officers, who were “alert” and “talkative” after the shooting. Shots were fired, with the suspect being hit numerous times. “Were they vehicles, out of vehicles”, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton said.

Authorities say two New York City Police Department officers and another man have been shot in Brooklyn. The investigation is ongoing.
