Police fatally shoot man during East Williamsburg armed robbery call, NYPD says
A man was shot and killed by police officers in Brooklyn on Sunday morning after he allegedly fired at two NYPD officers.
Police responded to call about a robbery at 7:43 a.m.on Sunday at 40 Debevoise Ave.in East Williamsburg, according to police. He was identified as Jermaine Johnson, 42, of Brooklyn.
The shooting took place after police initially responded to reports of a robbery, according to Deputy Commissioner Steven Davis. They say police fired back, striking the suspect in the torso.
A gun was recovered at the scene, cops said.
No officers were injured but two were taken to a hospital for observation. “We do believe that he brandished his weapon both times and that he did have his firearm pointed at civilians”.
“I heard it in my sleep, it woke me up”, she said.
She said she then looked out her living room window and saw the officers.
“He kept telling him ‘give me your money, ‘” she said. I thought he was going to shoot him. She said she got her grandmother to safety, and called 911. He said, ‘I’ll kill you, I’ll kill you.
She said the gunman walked away after the pistol-whipping and that she heard the cops yell “Freeze!” before gunshots rang out.
“They had no choice”, she said of the officers.
That’s when they opened fire, police said.
