Police hear elderly couple crying from loneliness, cook them a meal
The Facebook page Questura di Roma, which translates to Police in Rome, posted photos last week of the officers with the elderly couple.
Jole and her 94-year-old husband Michele have been married for almost 70 years and said that they rarely get visits from family or friends, which resulted in the couple feeling incredibly lonely.
The department shared the couple’s story along with two photos of the husband and wife, married 70 years, eating their pasta with an officer cleaning up at the sink in the background. The kitchen was sparse and didn’t show many signs of being used, so one of the officers cooked while the others sat at the table chatting to the couple. “Jole and Michele are not victims of scams and no thief entered the house – there is no one to save”, the police noted on Facebook.
As they waited for an ambulance to check on the couple, police chose to do something special. It describes Jole and Michele alone at home with the TV as company. The post was written with dramatic, poetic flair. “But with a precious ingredient: Their humanity”.
The couple, who have been married for almost 70 years, had not committed a crime or been the victims of one – they were simply lonely. “They understand that just a little human warmth will restore tranquility to Jole and Michele”. “But when the loneliness is a burden on the heart, it may happen that they lose hope”.
The post from Questura di Roma has been shared almost 24,000 times. “You are true heroes”.
