Police identify man who scaled Trump Tower
Police have identified the man who was scaling Trump Tower in Midtown Manhattan on Wednesday. The 21st floor just so happens to also be the Marc Fisher Footwear showroom.
He then traveled from Virginia to the city and got a hotel room Tuesday night, police said. He evaded cops while climbing the Fifth Avenue building for three hours before they were able to corral him. Trump also lives there, but he wasn’t there at the time.
Fisher holds the license for Ivanka Trump’s footwear collection.
Many on social media took a humorous view of the Trump Tower climber.
Donald Trump weighed in on Twitter about the event.
Police officers smashed windows in an attempt to block his progress earlier in the afternoon, the Associated Press reported.
Chief Vincent Giordano, commander of NYPD emergency services, said authorities took the first calls about the man at about 3:30 p.m. and thought they were responding to a case of a jumper. He climbed to about the 21st floor of the building.
People who have climbed other structures in NY have been arrested and faced charges such as reckless endangerment and trespassing.
“Believe me, if my goal was not significant, I would not risk my life pursuing it”, the man said in the video.
“As for anyone else who’s watching, please help make this video go viral so that it gets to Mr. Trump and be sure to get out and vote for Mr. Trump in the 2016 election”, he said.
So Steve, suction cups in hand, climbed. “Believe me, if my goal was not significant, I would not risk my life pursuing it”. “I hope there’s something more political behind [it]”.
“This man performed a ridiculous and risky stunt”, Michael Cohen, an executive at the Trump Organization, said in an emailed statement. “I’m 100 percent certain the NYPD had better things to do”.
“Great job today by the NYPD in protecting the people and saving the climber”, Trump tweeted late Wednesday.
The climber began his ascent from a terrace that is open to the public during the day.
