Police identify suspect shot after chase as 31-year-old
Avondale police say at least one suspect took off in a vehicle toward Phoenix.
Baseline Road on-ramp is now shut down at Interstate 10 for the investigation.
Police say the robbery happened at the Credit Union West near Litchfield Road and Van Buren Street.
Phoenix police were able to get an unmarked pick-up truck in front of Del Rio during the pursuit, and the officer driving that vehicle forced Del Rio into a right turn.
A suspect in a bank robbery and pursuit from Avondale to Tempe has died after an exchange of gunfire with police officers Tuesday afternoon.
It’s not the first time a police chase in Phoenix has ended with a shooting broadcast on live TV.
According to the probable cause statement, the two other suspects were arrested after they bailed out of the SUV vehicle at different locations during the pursuit that ended at a Tempe intersection. The other suspect was taken into custody by Phoenix police.
Police told NBC News that the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
‘He already shot at police officers.
‘We know that he meant to escape at all costs and put anybody in danger, ‘ Phoenix police Sgt. Jonathan Howard told reporters. The suspects fled in a black SUV, opening fire when police tried to pull them over.
At least one television station in Phoenix was broadcasting live and streaming on Facebook Live when police forced a auto off the road and fired multiple shots through the windshield.
“Members of our special assignment unit attempted to box him in on the roadway”, says Howard. Because of the positioning of the vehicles and the unfortunate placement of a palm tree, we can’t tell if the third officer in the silver minivan fires any shots or not.
Detectives from multiple jurisdictions are investigating.
