Police launch search after person goes over Niagara Falls
NIAGARA FALLS, New York Police say they have launched a search after someone reportedly fell into the water at Niagara Falls.
Park Police spokesman Randy Simons told The Associated Press it appeared the woman, said to be in her 40s, intentionally entered the water to “harm herself”.
Officials with the Niagara Falls Fire Department say Canadian authorities are helping search efforts.
Authorities didn’t release information about the victim, including if she is alive, the station said.
Dozens of people are killed going over Niagara Falls each year, the vast majority of which are suicides, though they are often not publicized.
Emergency services are now scouring the river below the mammoth waterfall, which gushes six million cubic feet of water every minute at 70 miles per hour.
