Police, MCMC Raid Malaysiakini Office Over Report
Zainuddin said the police and officers from MCMC went to the office of the two news portals in Petaling Jaya at about 6 pm.
In their reports, they had mentioned that a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy public prosecutor (DPP) was transferred out of his division.
Police officers and members of the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) raided the offices of Malaysian news organizations Malaysiakiniand The Star Online on Friday, November 6.
He had been involved in investigations into alleged financial irregularities of government-owned SRC worldwide, Malaysiakini said.
The team recorded a statement from the news portal’s editor-in-chief, Steven Gan for about three hours.
Although not expressly stated, the article appeared to suggest that the alleged transfer could be for deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Shazalee Abdul Khairi, the same officer who was on August 1 picked up by the police for questioning.
Police raided offices of news portal Malaysiakini, and English daily The Star over their reports titled “Sudden Transfer MACC Prosecutor” and “MACC Prosecutor Shocked Sudden Transfer” they published respectively on Monday (Nov 2).
The Star Online said that the police and MCMC are expected to return on Monday to record a statement from the journalist and to seize the computer used as well.
Kuala Lumpur Criminal Investigation Department head Datuk Zainuddin Ahmad was quoted as saying the raid was conducted following a report by an officer from the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) last Tuesday.
On Twitter later, the AGC said Ahmad Shazalee had not been transferred out of the MACC.
Gan, when commenting on the incident, said Malaysiakini is willing to cooperate with the authorities but would never disclose the identity of its sources.
