Police officer in Los Angeles County found shot to death
“They’ve evacuated some buildings and some townhomes, and they’re looking for this suspect that killed a police officer”, he said.
Ricardo Galvez, a five-year veteran of the Downey Police Department, died in what Lt. John Carina described to KTLA-TV as a “brazen shooting”.
A Downey, Calif., police officer was fatally shot while sitting in his personal vehicle in the Downey Police HQ parking lot, and after an initial investigation, authorities believe he may have been targeted.
At some point a Downey police officer’s body was discovered in the station’s parking lot, located in the 10900 block of Brookshire Avenue, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department officials confirmed. “It doesn’t look random”, Carina said. Although police initially stated that Galvez had been targeted, they later said they do not believe he was targeted personally or for his profession.
According to data from the Officer Down Memorial Page, six California officers have already been killed thus far in 2015, but Officer Galvez is the first from Los Angeles.
After a vehicle chase followed by a foot chase, police arrested two suspects in the town of Montebello shortly after midnight.
Homicide detectives are reviewing surveillance video of the incident and are trying to determine what led to the shooting, he said. An officer was shot earlier to death while sitting in his vehicle in the parking lot of Downey police headquarters.
“There’s a few other people being detained and questioned”, Saldana said. Officers Steven Guthrie and Wayne Richard Presley stopped to assist a disabled big rig on Florence Avenue just west of Lakewood Boulevard when a vehicle driven by a drunk 39-year-old woman from Norwalk slammed into both officers. The suspects then got back in their vehicle and took off.
Authorities didn’t release the name of the adult suspects, and said they were not seeking anyone else in connection with the crime.
SWAT officers swept neighborhoods and detained several people after the shooting.
Downey Police Chief Carl Charles praised Galvez’s professionalism and said the officer loved serving the city.
