Police Plan to Release More on Deaths of 3 Near NY Campus
A distraught ex-boyfriend stabbed two SUNY Geneseo students to death before calling his father and taking his own life, police said Monday afternoon.
As of right now, it’s unclear exactly how the deceased-Kelsey Amnese, 21; Colin Kingston, 24; and Matthew Hutchinson, 24-were related to each other, but it has been confirmed that Hutchinson was a student athlete from Vancouver, British Columbia, who was in his final year at the State University of New York (SUNY) Geneseo.
The incident reportedly took place at an off-campus student house at 18 Wadsworth St. around 6 a.m. on January 17 when police intercepted a call from one of the victims’s fathers who told them “his son called from an unknown number and stated that he murdered his girlfriend and was going to kill himself”, Buffalo News reports.
Hutchinson and Annese died from stab wounds and Kingston later killed himself, Szczesniak said.
Hutchinson, 24, of Vancouver, British Columbia, was a hockey player and a volunteer firefighter with the Geneseo Fire Department. He was just that kind of guy.
Hutchinson was also a senior and a hockey player at SUNY Geneseo. “I can’t imagine as a parent losing a child who had so many accomplishments already and only had more to gain”, he said. “Geneseo has a great college and just hearing something like this is just unbelievable”.
It was unclear what the relationship between Hutchinson and Annese was, but Szczesniak said it appeared that Kingston found them together before he allegedly killed them.
Annese was a senior from Webster near Rochesterwho was a well-known member of the women’s basketball team.
There were no prior reports of a troubled relationship between Kingston and Annese, according to police. “Our thoughts and prayers are with you”.
“Some of the officers responding yesterday knew Mr. Kingston personally”.
“It’s a profoundly sad day for all of us at SUNY Geneseo and in the village”, she said.
College president Denise Battles said many students were returning to the school after winter break and said it would be hard for them to face the new semester with the tragedy on their minds.
The university said Monday both the men’s and women’s basketball games that were originally scheduled for Tuesday have been postponed. Annese, a guard, played 13 minutes and scored five points in her team’s 63-52 victory.
“I was pretty close to him”, Chanler said. He put effort into these things like nobody else.Chanler said. Investigators say the former Geneseo student called his father before turning the knife on himself.
Note to readers: This is a corrected story. He was a firefighter on one of the B.C. Wildfire Branch’s 20-person unit crews last summer, said Kevin Skrepnek, a fire information officer.
