Police probe after allegations that officer spat on man
A 34-year-old Baltimore police officer is under fire after a video surfaced online that appears to show the man spitting on a man he was arresting.
Derek Valcourt has the video and reaction from the interim police commissioner. “You´re under arrest. Get down, man. You´re under arrest”, Sergeant Robert Mesner shouts at the man. Then he handcuffed him and spit on him.
The video, posted on Twitter by an activist named Kwame Rose, prompted T.J. Smith, Baltimore Police Department Director of Media Relations, to issue a statement stating that an internal investigation is underway. David said police want to talk with anyone who was present and investigators would like to see any additional video.
In the video, an officer alleged to be Mesner said “You’re going to be Tased”.
“Go ahead! Go ahead!”
“His body and his head move forward in a manner that suggests he may have actually spit on the handcuffed arrested person”, Interim Police Commissioner Kevin Davis said. An off screen bystander is heard yelling, “He just spit on him, he just spit on him”.
The video comes days after another cell phone video showed a suspect punching officers as he violently resisted arrest. “Our entire community deserves to be treated with dignity and respect”, Davis said.
“We deal with people, communities, families, in crisis-and that’s not always pretty”. “This isn’t being reviewed, this isn’t being looked at, this isn’t being glanced at, this is a full-blown investigation”. The officer at the center of the investigation is on administrative duty. He has not yet been identified. Six Baltimore police officers are now awaiting trial for their role in his death after an investigation showed Gray sustained a severe neck injury while in the back of a police van with his hands in cuffs and legs restrained.
