Police probe firing on Wasim Akram’s car
Pakistan’s former fast bowler Wasim Akram has confidence on young fast bowling talent.
Pakistan cricket community on Wednesday strongly condemned the attack on former captain Wasim Akram and called on the government to immediately apprehend the culprits involved in firing on the legendary pacer.
The 49-year-old is said to have been travelling to Karachi’s National Stadium to coach a training camp when a man allegedly slammed his auto into the back of the former sportsman’s vehicle. But Akram later said the man had been about to shoot him when someone revealed who he was.
Senior police officer Munir Shaikh ruled out an assassination attempt or a robbery.
The Deputy Inspector General of Karachi later said, “We have not reached any conclusion, but surely this is a case of road rage”.
Akram, considered one of the greatest one-day worldwide cricketers of all time, told reporters that no one was hurt in the shooting which occurred as he was on his way to the city’s National Stadium where he is holding a bowling camp.
Pakistan did not host a top-flight worldwide cricket match for six years after that attack. He took 414 wickets in 104 test matches and another 502 wickets in 356 one-day internationals before retiring soon after the 2003 World Cup.
