Police question man in theft from 93-year-old in wheelchair
It doesn’t get any lower than stealing money out of the bra of a 93-year-old woman in wheelchair, but a man in East Harlem did just that.
The 26 year old man’s arrest came Friday morning, just three blocks from the East 116th Reginald clothing store where Lopez ripped Vasquez of her $600 monthly pension, Wednesday early afternoon. Police say the woman was looking at the wall of clothes when Lopez reached into her cleavage and took a white envelope with an unspecified amount of cash, according to police.
Surveillance cameras captured the moment an unidentified male snuck up behind Vasquez, slipped his hand into her brassiere, took an envelope full of money and ran off.
The video shows the suspect browsing inside the store before he appears to scope out Vasquez and suddenly creeps up from behind her wheelchair and goes for the cash. She told the newspaper she had put hundreds of dollars in an envelope and concealed it inside her blouse. “Because I tried to grab him, but he pushed my arm away”.
“I use it to pay for everything”.
“He’s the lowest of the low”, said store manager Josh Cohen.
“I was scared. I wasn’t expecting it”, Vasquez told the Post. “Until the money comes next month, I’m not sure how I’m going to pay the bills”, Vasquez said. “I need it. because my husband died seven years ago, and I’m alone”.
But the kind-hearted Jehovah’s Witness said that she would forgive the thief and pray that he changes his ways.
“Police said the suspect is about 5’10” and 160 lbs, ABC 7 News reported.
“I feel better now that they arrested him”.
