Police reveal details of prior run-in with woman
Following the threats, an officer fired at Gaines, she fired several shots back, which were returned with more shots from officers, this time striking the 23-year-old multiple times and killing her. Her 5-year-old son which she was holding was injured during the encounter, but is said to have non-life threatening wounds and is expected to survive. A five-year-old was also shot in the incident.
Early Monday morning, police had gone to serve several arrest warrants on two suspects, a man and a woman, at Sulky Court in Randallstown, in Baltimore County, Maryland.
Police say that they knocked on Gaines’ door, but no one answered despite being able to hear the sound of voices inside.
Frankly, I think Gaines put her child out as bait, in hopes the SWAT officer would step into the apartment so that she could murder him.
“We discharged one round at her”, Police Chief James Johnson said. That’s when an officer shot at the woman, police said, and Gaines fired two shots.
Police said they don’t know whether the boy was shot by officers or by his mother.
The shooting of Korryn Gaines, 23, of Randallstown, Maryland, about 17 mores northwest of Baltimore, on Monday prompted outrage on social media, reigniting concerns about police use of force, especially against African-Americans.
There were no other apparent witnesses to the incident, and none of the officers involved in the incident were wearing body cameras.
The standoff ended in the shootout about 3 p.m., police said. Black Lives Matter supporters have already begun paying tribute and memorializing Korryn Gaines. That man was arrested. Investigators have not determined if the child was shot by police or by Gaines.
Officers had stopped Gaines in March for driving without license plates. Finally she asks if he wants to go out there and he says “no”. In one video, she informs her son, who is in the backseat, to record everything that happens should she be arrested.
Gaines’ boyfriend is charged with second-degree assault, which stems from a fight with Gaines, police said.
Police evacuated the building and say officers attempted to negotiate with Gaines. Gaines reportedly also has a young daughter, but it is unknown whether she was at the apartment at the time.
Video footage of the stand-off has appeared on social media and a member of the SWAT team can be seen in the doorway of the apartment. “Gotta thank my dad for teaching me how to protect myself (cells)…nd i gotta thank myself (cells) for teaching me who i need protection from”, she wrote. The department did not give the races of the officers involved, who were placed on administrative leave.
Johnson said Gaines was posting video of police operations as they unfolded, and people were encouraging her not to comply with police instructions. “She was smart and very respectful”.
Armacost said Gaines espoused anti-government views but did not know if she belonged to a specific anti-government group. Armacost said it took an hour for police to decide her accounts needed to be deactivated and for that request to be approved by Facebook, which owns Instagram.
