Police say Delta State University shooter left note of apology
Shannon Lamb did not indicate a motive for yesterday’s killing of Amy Prentiss, 41, nor did he suggest he planned to hurt anyone else. “We don’t know why this man did what he did”, Cleveland Police Chief Charles Bingham said on Tuesday.
Officers saw him pull over his auto near Greenville and run into the woods. Contractors were cleaning the office Tuesday, removing bloodstained items and ripping up carpet. He says, ‘I shot my wife last night” and also mentions that there is a “sweet dog’ in the house that is ‘not going to bother anyone’ but is likely upset.
At a news conference late on Monday, police in Gautier said they had initially contacted Lamb by phone, and later followed his auto. He did not provide an explanation.
The Mississippi geography professor who was the prime suspect in the shooting deaths of his girlfriend and a history professor on campus left behind a written apology, authorities said Tuesday.
“For me, if I were to lose a professor that’s somebody that’s close to my heart here at Delta State, they make it a point to have that relationship with their students”, student Marissa Hall said.
Police asked the caller his name, but he doesn’t want to give it.
Investigators say that so far there is no evidence of a love triangle or any connection between the two victims.
Shannon Lamb: That’s all I feel like saying right now.
Nevertheless, by the time Lamb called authorities he was well on his way to University campus where he sought to murder the married assistant history professor at the academic’s office whom Lamb suspected was romantically involved with Prentiss. The school said emergency management officials had set up a command center on campus.
Authorities say they haven’t uncovered a motive for either slaying.
The Biloxi Sun Herald reported that the woman lived with Lamb.
He became conscious of his bloated cheek, withdrew from work earlier this summer and failed to attend scheduled classes at Delta State University. Lamb took his own life later that night. Lamb is also accused of killing his girlfriend at their home 300 miles away. Soon after Lamb made the 911 call Monday, he then allegedly shot and killed a colleague on the university’s campus.
One of Lamb’s longtime friends described him as smart, charismatic and funny. They divorced 15 years ago, but remained friends and had a daughter who is now 19. Courtney Warren said it was terrifying to see her former school covered with police.
“It didn’t end the way I wanted it to”, said Chief Bingham. University President William LaForge said he didnt know of any conflict between Lamb and Schmidt but “obviously, there was something in Mr. Lambs mind.”. He started working there in 2009 and taught geography and education classes, and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity.
