Police say DUI suspect drove a mile with body lodged in car
Sanchez (pictured left before her arrest and right from a Facebook photo) told cops she had been drinking in several bars that night and was on her way home when she allegedly hit the man.
Oceanside police said the woman, Esteysi Sanchez, 29, was driving home around 6:20 a.m. Monday after a night of drinking.
“The force of the collision caused the victim to go through the windshield of the vehicle and become lodged in the front passenger seat”, Keim said.
Officers found Sanchez a short time later at her home and took her into custody, he said.
Sanchez then walked away from the auto to her house nearby. “I mean, just seeing that up close and personal, it’s kind of traumatizing in a way”, Esparza told KNSD. “She said, ‘I don’t know, I don’t know”. Witnesses told police she then got out of the vehicle and walked away, KGTV reports. The body lodged in the car’s windshield before the suspect walked out as if nothing happened.
One of Sanchez’s neighbors said he noticed the auto but didn’t want to take a closer look, since he could tell it was an upsetting scene. He said the normally quiet, working-class neighborhood was shocked by the incident. “His body came to rest on the passenger side”. He was pronounced dead after paramedics arrived.
The victim’s name was not immediately released. She was believed to have seen her husband who told her to call the police.
Sanchez is jailed on a complaint of vehicular homicide.
A makeshift memorial with a heart-shaped balloon, flowers and candles was placed on the street Tuesday near where the crash occurred.
