Police search for man caught throwing bacon at Las Vegas mosque
A vandal draped raw bacon over the door handles at a Las Vegas mosque in an incident police are investigating a possible hate crime.
Practicing Muslims are forbidden from consuming pork, and “bigots often use pigs or pork to offend Muslim sensibilities”, the press release added.
Surveillance video of the incident captured a man in a baseball cap and glasses stringing raw bacon on the doors and handles a little after 3 a.m. on Sunday.
The Council for American-Islamic Relations condemned the attack in a statement to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, and called for it to be investigated by state and local authorities as a hate crime.
Eventually, one of the worshipers used a napkin in order to remove the bacon, promptly discarding it in a garbage bin.
“What if one of us came early to do some prayer, and he met this person face to face, what will happen?”
A spokesperson for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department told BuzzFeed News that, as of Tuesday, no federal agencies are involved in the investigation.
The group reports 71 incidents involving mosques were committed in 2015 – compared to 20 in 2014, 23 in 2013 and 29 in 2012.
Others, however, were more confused than anything by the alleged crime.
