Police seek clues after deadly shooting at ZombiCon
Chaos broke out at a zombie-themed street festival in downtown Fort Myers, Florida, after shooting left one man dead and five other people wounded.
Authorities have not commented on a possible motive for the shooting that sent throngs of Zombi-clad revellers running through the streets.
Victor Medico said Expavious Tyrell Taylor, a 20-year-old who played football at a local junior college, died at the scene, but no other details about his death were released.
Four others were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and a fifth person refused medical attention, authorities said.
Detectives have been canvassing the area for witnesses, authorities said, asking anyone with information on what happened to call the Fort Myers police.
Jasmine Gaure, Taylor’s girlfriend, told the newspaper they had only been at the festival for about 45 minutes when gunshots rang out.
Gaure, 26, said Taylor was interested in forensic science and had worked a funeral home preparing bodies for burial to get experience. Stancel was raised in the area and said she doesn’t think the downtown area is risky, but said the shooting will be in the back of her mind at future events. But the offensive lineman for the ASA College football team in Miami had the weekend off and they wanted to make the most of their free time.
The shooting occurred Saturday at ZombiCon in Fort Myers, which had been expected to attract about 20,000 zombie-lovers.
“We take the safety of our patrons very seriously and take precautions in hiring security and police officers for our annual event”, they said in a post on their Facebook page. “Quarantined. No Zombies allowed”, the notice read.
“Sadly, we’re moving in that direction”.
