Policeman arrested after crash that killed student is fired
According to Sergeants Benevolent Association, which promotes the welfare of New York’s finest, two uniformed officers were shot at after suspects in a “dark colored sedan with tinted windows slowly approached them, then made a statement about “getting” them and proceeded to fire shots”.
Bratton said two other off-duty officers who were with Batka have been stripped of their guns and shields while the investigation continues. The officers were not hit.
The association said that the auto had four “male blacks” inside.
The shooting follows recent incidents that shook the nation in which Dallas police officers were shot and killed by a sniper on July 7 and three cops in Baton Rouge were killed July 17.
New York City Police Commissioner William Bratton told the Associated Press Wednesday that investigators reviewed video of the incident and determined that the shots that missed the officers were aimed at another target.
An NYPD spokesman could not confirm the union’s information.
“Please remain alert at all times”, the group’s initial Facebook message urged members. NYPD officers have since been patrolling in pairs and taken other security measures, according to NBC. The shooters in both attacks have been identified as veterans angry about police killings of African-American civilians.
