Poll shows tight races for president, Senate in North Carolina
The rough reception given Matt Lauer for his back-to-back interviews with Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump laid bare a disagreement over whether journalists who moderate presidential debates should call candidates out for telling lies.
The New York Times highlighted one instance in particular, involving an Army veteran in the audience who asked Clinton how she would overcome the Islamic State.
She also claimed that she didn’t want any “special treatment” because she was the first woman nominee of a major party to run for president.
Following Trump and Clinton’s appearances at the NBC forum, where they answered questions for a half hour each, Graham said both candidates’ statements “disturb [him] greatly”.
Clinton announced that said she will convene a bipartisan meeting of national security leaders on Friday. “It is like he is living in his own celebrity reality TV program”, Clinton said at a campaign rally in Charlotte Thursday afternoon.
On Thursday, Clinton slammed Trump for kicking off his political career by questioning whether President Barack Obama was actually born in the United States.
“She gave an entire speech about how the alt right movement is using his campaign to advance its hate movement”, Nick Merrill said. She also touted the support of numerous Republican national security experts that have chosen to endorse her candidacy, helping bolster her case that Trump is broadly unacceptable. The survey found Trump with the support of 44% of likely North Carolina voters, a statistically insignificant three points better than Clinton’s 41%.
The Trump campaign said the total included a “significant contribution” from the Republican nominee himself.
Many intense partisans don’t believe – or don’t care – when an independent analyst questions the truth of a candidate’s statements.
Trump, who has never held elected office, has criticized Clinton’s judgment, attacking her vote in favor of the 2003 Iraq war and her support for the USA intervention in Libya in 2011.
The editorial page of the Dallas Morning News – a beacon of conservatism in presidential politics in a deep-red state – turned a hue of purple this week by endorsing a Democrat for the White House.
Clinton elaborated on those remarks at the Thursday press conference, saying putting a significant number of USA troops on the ground in Iraq and Syria would “fulfill one of (ISIS’) dearest wishes which is to drag the United States back into a ground war in that region”.
“What you didn’t hear from Donald Trump last night was any plan to take on IS”, Clinton said. “Someone who has insulted Muslims”, Clinton said.
Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway met Trump supporters in Congress on Thursday morning, and Trump spoke with the group by phone to thank them for their support.
The comment was reminiscent of Trump’s January description of the loyalty of his supporters.
“I think that when you serve in the armed forces, that’s a very special situation”, Trump said.
