Poll suggests Clinton helped herself with debate performance
Former Sen. Rick Santorum said on the radio Wednesday that the first Democratic debate revealed all the candidates to be socialists.
Grassroots Bernie Sanders supporters organized thousands of viewing parties around the country to watch five of the candidates spar.
“That debate was, I’m going to be very frank, rigged in terms of who was going to get the time on the floor by the way that Anderson Cooper was selecting people to supposedly respond to something someone else said”, Webb explained. “I think the secretary is right, and that is that the American people are sick and exhausted of hearing about your damn e-mails”, Sanders yelled out. But Sanders’ popularity surged over the summer at the same time Clinton was dogged by revelations about her use of a private email server during her time as secretary of state. But Clinton appears to have picked up the support of a number of undecided voters, increasing her support from 44% to 52%.
It was a pivotal moment for Clinton as Sanders seemed to give concerned Democrats permission to look past the email controversy – and it was only reinforced when Lincoln Chafee chimed in. Bernie Sanders summed it up well: “Enough of the emails”.
Sanders is, by far, the more consistent messenger. “Cause that’s what he is”, Trump said, in apparent disregard to Sanders” platform and just one day after he put out a brief anti-Sanders ad about ISIS on his Instagram account.
The Democratic candidates for president talked about a wide variety of issues in their recent debate but issues of income equality and race relations played a major part of the discussion. More students of mine showed up to the GOP debate, and more students on our campus identify as conservative, according to polls. So while Clinton preoccupied herself with dodging questions about her high profile scandals and going after Sanders’ controversial politics, the Sanders camp went after the hearts and minds of voters watching at home.
Cooper’s question came after an exchange with Vermont Sen. Yet Democrats were apparently more impressed with Clinton, who is already viewed favorably by the vast majority of party identifiers. Sanders, who almost matched Clinton in fundraising between July and October, has proven he can compete with Clinton financially by utilizing small donors.
