Pope Francis Declares Mother Teresa A Saint
Just as Mother Teresa will be canonized as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church, CNN ran a piece that included quotes of a critic of the prominent Catholic nun who did humanitarian work in India.
Hundreds of people in the crowds held up signs showing support for the nun born Anjezë Gonxhe Bojaxhiu in the Ottoman Empire near the border between modern-day Albania and Macedonia before beginning her missionary work in India.
This morning too, Francis gave powerful expression to hers and his commitment to the poor and the outcasts by inviting 1,500 poor and discarded people-cared for by her order across Italy-to attend the canonization.
The members of BJP Manipur have shared the elation of all the Christian brothers & sisters of Manipur, and the rest of the country, on the canonization of Mother Teresa, as Saint Teresa of Kolkata.
“Pope Francis, Pope John Paul II and Mother Teresa are the church figures I admire and love most and in some way all three are here today”, O’Brien said.
Applause erupted in St. Peter’s Square even before Francis finished pronouncing the rite of canonization, evidence of the admiration Mother Teresa enjoyed from Christians and non-Christians alike during her life and after her 1997 death.
Long recognized for her works, Mother Teresa was honored numerous times, including winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979.
Catholics here said her spirit remains strong in Central Illinois.
“If I’m going to be a saint, I’m going to be a saint of darkness, and I’ll be asking from heaven to be the light of those who are in darkness on Earth”, she once wrote. Doctors who visited her field hospitals said she perpetuated suffering by denying patients pain medication and working more to convert the suffering to Catholicism than to cure them.
That her work lives on through the Missionaries of Charity the worldwide group of sisters who dedicate their lives to the charitable work inspired by their founder, Mother now Saint Teresa. “With great spontaneity, I think we will continue to call her Mother Teresa”, he said.
According to correspondence that came to light after she died in 1997, Teresa experienced what the church calls a “dark night of the soul” – a period of spiritual doubt, despair and loneliness that numerous great mystics experienced. He added, “her mission to the urban and existential peripheries remains for us today an eloquent witness to God’s closeness to the poorest of the poor”. He admitted even he would find it hard to call her “St. Teresa” since her tenderness was so maternal. They’re getting seats of honor for the celebration and will then be served lunch in the lobby of the Vatican auditorium.
The ceremony came a day before the 19th anniversary of Mother Teresa’s death in Kolkata, the Indian city where she spent almost four decades working in wretched slums.
Delegations from at least 15 national governments are expected at the Vatican.
