Pope joins faithful in the pews in St. Peter’s Basilica
Pope Francis will use a modified Toledo-built Jeep Wrangler when he visits the United States next month.
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, maker of Jeep, is not disclosing the configuration of the popemobile, and the Vatican said it is already in the hands of the Secret Service and won’t be on view before the pope’s September 22 to 27 U.S. visit.
Details of the vehicle weren’t immediately available. The Vatican did not provide more specific information on when Pope Francis will use the vehicle during his trip to Washington, D.C., New York and Philadelphia next month.
The “Popemobile”, an informal term long used to designate the vehicle by which the pope travels, doesn’t necessarily refer to one specific auto. A professional carpenter, Cahoon also constructed the altar and other furnishings for the Mass at Nationals Park with Pope Benedict XVI in 2008.
“A Jeep Wrangler will be used as the popemobile in the USA (like the one used in Ecuador in July 2015)”, the Vatican press office said in a statement on August 20.
