Porsche 911 Carrera with Turbocharged Engine to Debut at Frankfurt Motor Show
It’s a nice mix that only rear engine’d cars can pull off. Turbos most certainly always somewhat neuter an exhaust note as that’s just the nature of how things work. The only 911 not to be turbocharged is the track-focused GT3.
We’re pleased to say it hasn’t. Using turbochargers with modified compressor wheels, a model-specific exhaust system, and a different tune for the engine management system, the 911 Carrera S delivers 420 hp from the same displacement. And so is the speed.
The completely new engine generation featuring twin-turbo technology enhances the driving pleasure of the 911 Carrera and provides a 20 hp increase compared to the previous models. This is 20bhp and 60Nm more than before, and in an auto that only weighs 30kg more than its predecessor it has a massive effect. The S model will have a more refined engine tuning so that it can accelerate from 0-60mph in 3.7 seconds. It feels ferocious off the line and the mid-range shove from those two turbos force-feeding the engine with air is eye-widening. This is especially significant considering we are just 10 days away from the start of the Frankfurt Motor Show and all the major automakers would be looking to come out with their best arsenal.
The turbo tearaways get a mild styling tweak at each end, standard Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) to lower ride height by 10mm and updated multimedia setup. It means the car’s breadth of ability is now even broader, with a comfortable ride in the standard setting and taut body control in Sport.
When equipped with the optional Sport Chrono Package, the 911 Carrera now comes with a mode switch on the steering wheel, derived from the hybrid map switch in the 918 Spyder.
Along with the Ford Mustang and the Toyota Corolla, the Porsche 911 is one of only a few vehicles that can boast about being built without interruption for more than a decade. Officially, this PDK-equipped Carrera S will return 36.7mpg combined and 174g/km CO2. The rear lid is another element that was changed and now features vertical louvers. There is a 7-inch touchscreen system as well that can used by the drivers to navigate to the desired location. Google Earth and Google Streetview are also being integrated for the first time to offer better orientation.
When taken for a spin on the road, performance of the new Porsche 911 is simply stunning as well with the vehicle achieving a top speed of 295kmph whereas Porsche 911 Carrera S attains a top speed of 307kmph.
