Possible debris from El Faro washes ashore in Bahamas
Possible debris from El Faro is starting to wash ashore.
The items were found on the island of San Salvador.
The large container is one of several items reportedly washing ashore in San Salvador and Exhuma, the Nassau Guardian says.
But a serial number on the refrigeration unit matches an item in the customer tracking system on Tote Maritime’s website, confirming that it was on the El Faro, according to WTLV- and WJXX-TV, Jacksonville, research.
San Salvador Island Administrator Theophilus Cox told the newspaper that residents were collecting items “that were believed to be on the ship”, which included toiletries, personal items and the portion of the container that was found on Exuma Island.
National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Peter C. Knudson released the following statement: “The NTSB has not received any direct reports of debris from El Faro being recovered in the Bahamas”.
‘A friend of mine found a freezer filled with chocolate candy bars and stuff like that, ‘ he said.
The Navy team tasked with locating the El Faro’s voyage data recorder (VDR) will begin its search Saturday, a few 24 days after the cargo ship vanished near the Bahamas.
Tote Services, sister company of El Faro’s owner, Tote Maritime, stated that it is aware of the latest developments ‘and is working with the relevant authorities to verify that the material is from the El Faro’.
The Captain departed Jacksonville, FL on September 29, 2015 on a southeasterly course for San Juan, PR. This course took the ship on a track near the Bahama Islands and straight into the storm.
“We really need closure”, Samuels said.
The 40- year old cargo ship never made it to it’s destination leaving the family with many questions unanswered.
By that Thursday, the crew reported that the ship had lost power and was taking on water and listing at 15 degrees.
