Postal Union Endorses Bernie Sanders
The McClatchy-Marist poll, taken between October 30 and November 11, shows Trump now trails Sanders by 12 percentage points, 53 to 41. At a September campaign event at Benedict College, a historically black college in SC, West even introduced him as “brother Bernie Sanders”.
The influence of organized labor in recent presidential election cycles has been data-mined and dissected by academics, demonstrating that union workers and people from union households collectively can spur turnout on Election Day in key battleground states, turning canvassing, collaboration and now social media by volunteers into candidate votes.
“If I sat down with my scheduling and advance people today and put together a five-city tour in five days, I could generate mammoth crowds in five different states”, Weaver said.
Labor for Bernie is loosely organized, earnest, and fueled by the sense that there should be a contest for the Democratic nomination. Before the union’s board announced its decision to back the Vermont senator, he had only picked up the endorsement of the 190,000 members of Nationals Nurses United. Labor for Bernie offers online tools to link Sanders supporters by union or region as well as templates for talking about his candidacy.
Larry Cohen, a senior adviser to Sanders’ campaign and the former president of the Communications Workers of America, said the campaign welcomed the support.
The National Education Association, which has more than 3 million members, and the American Federation of Teachers, with more than 1.5 million members, have backed Clinton. He was knocked by pundits for giving Hillary Clinton a free pass on her email woes at the first debate. “It’s time for a political revolution”, said APWU President Mark Dimondstein, echoing a call to action from the candidate. Neither he nor his union has made any endorsement.
An AFL spokesman on Thursday said the federation’s thinking about when to endorse a candidate has not changed.
He added: “The bottom line is that if we are serious about our patriotism and about defending those who defended us it means that all of our veterans get the benefits and the health care they need and that they were promised and that they get that health care in a timely manner”. All of these endorsement announcements for Hillary Clinton aren’t good for anything but their headlines.
“We should be working to strengthen the Postal Service”, Sanders said in January. The union has about 185,000 members.
As Republican presidential hopefuls prepare to take the debate stage in Milwaukee, Wis., one of their Democratic rivals spoke of a different debate-prep strategy.
He has struggled to lay a glove on Clinton, with a negative attack against her at Iowa’s Jefferson-Jackson Dinner backfiring. “They’re not on Twitter as much, they’re not on Facebook as much, but you see tremendous support”.
