Powerball jackpot soars to $800 million

Multi-State Lottery Association officials say the Powerball jackpot is up to $450 million for Wednesday night’s drawing. For example, if you win $50,000 and a 3 was drawn for Power Play, your prize would be $150,000.

Meanwhile, the Mega Millions game has a huge jackpot of its own for tonight’s drawing – $165 million – since no one correctly picked Tuesday’s winning numbers of 1, 4, 36, 48 and 57 with the Mega Ball of 13.
Ppowerball’s Saturday jackpot climbed to an estimated $800 million.
Wednesday night’s draw was increased after no one won the lottery.

Each wager is comprised of two (2) sets of numbers.
Carole Everett, Maryland Lottery division spokeswoman, said the jackpot can be rolled over for as many times it can till “someone hits” the jackpot.
Wednesday’s jackpot was already more than a half-billion dollars.
“OK, that’s not good”, she said.
In Louisiana, Powerball tickets must be purchased by 9 p.m. on the night of the drawing. “It only takes one ticket to win”.
Bethea says the more people play, the more the state gets in return. The 44 states, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands that sell Powerball tickets generally use their share of sales for education. It was won in 2013 by Gloria Mackenzie, an 84-year-old Florida woman.
The prize would have a cash option of $428.4 million, and that’s before taxes are deducted.
The previous jackpot record was held by a 2012 MegaMillions game worth $656 million.
And what’s the magic to winning?
Unfortunately, the odds of winning the jackpot are, well, extremely unlikely and that number is growing even more as people who don’t usually play pick up a ticket – 1 in 292.2 million.
For some comparison, the chance of being struck by lightning in a year is about one in 960,000. And the chances of being bitten by a shark are less than 1 in 264.1 million. You never know what could happen.
