Pregnant mother and grandmother fatally shot
The baby survived and was in stable condition, but his mother and grandmother were both killed, police said.
Chew raced outside to find the unthinkable: Her 11-month-old nephew and her pregnant sister on the ground and bloody.
The child was wounded when gunfire broke out at 53 and Aberdeen streets at 7:10 p.m., according to preliminary information from police. Williams, a nurse, said she pulled off Wells’ clothes to examine her wounds as the woman faded in and out of consciousness, asking for help when she briefly came around.
She kept telling her nephew that it was okay and that she was there. “They were holding him real tight”.

“You have an innocent family coming home from a family outing”, Chicago Police Department Deputy Chief Eugene Roy said at a press conference on the gruesome shooting. Three others, including an eleven month old infant were wounded and remain in serious condition at a local city hospital. “You could tell right away he had been shot”, a witness inside the emergency room, Allen Florence, told WLS-TV.
No one is in custody for the shooting and Chew didn’t see a gunman and doesn’t know who would target her family, she said. “In a second, two generations of that child’s family were wiped out”. His 46-year-old grandmother was shot in the leg, a 25-year-old man was shot in both legs and another 25-year-old man was shot in the abdomen.
Less than an hour later, police announced the mother and grandmother had been killed.
Shootings and homicides are on the rise in Chicago this year and there’s been a recent surge.
Carpenter was near tears on the scene of the shooting Tuesday, asking how she will tell the young boy that his family is dead – and how to explain such violence to her own family.
