Prescription pill drop-off slated for 6 sites in Hudson County
Locally, the event runs from 10 a.m.to 2 p.m., at the Lakewood Police Department, 9401 Lakewood Drive SW.
Prescription solid dosage medications including pill tablets and capsules will be accepted, however intra-venous solutions, injectables, needles and over-the-counter medications will not be. Collection sites in every local community, manned by DEA and its local law enforcement and community partners, can be found by going to www.dea.gov or calling 800-882-9539.
More than 4.8 million pounds of pills have been collected nationwide during the nine take-back days.
Studies show that many people who abuse prescription drugs obtain the drugs from a family member or friend. Unused prescription drugs in homes create a public health and safety concern because the medications can be accidentally ingested, stolen, misused and abused.
Many Americans do not know how to properly dispose of unused medicine – it should not be thrown away or flushed down the toilet, which can lead to environmental problems.
The Hoquiam Police Department and the Montesano Police Department have permanent drug take back boxes as well.
“Prescription drug abuse is a big problem and this is a great opportunity for folks around the country to help reduce the threat”, DEA acting administrator Chuck Rosenberg said.
State’s Attorney Tom Gibbons, Coroner Steve Nonn, and Sheriff John Lakin are once again encouraging Madison County residents to bring their expired, or unwanted prescription or over-the-counter medications.
The disposal service is free and anonymous for consumers, with no questions asked, officials said.
