President Obama: Americans must ‘come together’ on gun crimes

In the aftermath, President Barack Obama has advocated for politicizing the tragedy in order to enact new gun control measures. Almaguer added that “ten days later, Kennedy was killed by a deranged gunman”.
Democrats are also seeking to end “straw purchases” – the practice of one person buying guns for another to evade legal restrictions.
“We’re going to have to come together as a country, but today is about the families”, Obama said before walking to his limo. The president left Roseburg just before 2 p.m.
Inside the high school, the president gave plenty of embraces, passed out commemorative presidential coins and had a particularly emotional exchange with Mathew Downing.
“Everybody should carry a gun”. Alan Montgomery made no attempt to hide his holsters. He’s got kids, you know? He has repeatedly and ever more strongly called on lawmakers to pass stricter gun laws, but to no avail.
The president has never been popular in this corner of southern Oregon.

There were no public speeches, only a 10-minute motorcade ride from the municipal airport, past crowds clustered in front of the Home Depot parking lot to the high school.
The White House had said that Obama was to meet privately with families of the victims but was not expected to make any statements about gun control.
The schedules for services for numerous people killed in the Umpqua Community College shooting were finalized Tuesday.
Sheriff John Hanlin has become a symbol of the region’s rejection of tighter gun control.

During his visit to Roseburg, the president met with leaders of the community college to express his thanks and condolences.
The Umpqua Community College shooting, as reported by HNGN, saw 10 deaths after student Christopher Harper Mercer went on a killing rampage before losing his own life in a gunfight with police.
Also on Friday, campus shootings were reported in Arizona and Texas. He recounted a portion of his meeting, saying the families shared their appreciation for the outreach and sympathy extended to them. I think back to Thurston when it happened so close by here, and I think how much it meant to have President Clinton to come at that.
He told The Wall Street Journal that he was at the airport to “protest the exploitation of victims for a political agenda”. But the president was already pushing his agenda.
