President Obama Says USA is at Fault, Demands Investigation into Deadly
He described Obama’s apology as “heartfelt”.
Obama told Doctors Without Borders that the US would review the attack to determine whether changes in USA military procedures could reduce the chances of a similar occurrence.
Taliban militants seized the strategic city of Kunduz in northern Afghanistan after 14 hours of intense fighting last Monday.
“On Saturday morning our forces provided close air support to Afghan forces at their request”. However, U.S. Gen. John F. Campbell confessed on Wednesday that the attack was “a USA decision made within the US chain of command”, reports The New York Times.
Doctors without Borders is not letting up in its demand for an independent investigation into a series of USA airstrikes on its hospital in Kunduz. “This can not be tolerated”, said Liu. The attack, which he called “mistaken”, killed 22 and wounded 37. The medical aid agency also known by its French acronym, MSF, is seeking the probe under the terms of the Geneva Convention.
MSF said it sent a letter on Tuesday to the 76 countries who signed up to the additional protocol of the Geneva Convention that set up the standing commission in 1991.
President Dr. Joanne Liu is continuing to call for an independent investigation of the incident, demanding information “to establish what happened in Kunduz, how it happened, and why it happened”. “If we don’t safeguard that medical space for us to do our activities, then it is impossible to work in other contexts like Syria, South Sudan, like Yemen”. “It’s about being able to care for populations in conflict areas”.
The airstrike hit MSF’s trauma centre, killing 12 staff and 10 patients and injuring 37 others. Witnesses said patients burned in their beds, and one doctor died while undergoing an emergency operation on his office desk.
The air strike on the hospital is among the worst and most visible cases of civilian deaths caused by USA forces during the 14-year Afghanistan war that Obama has declared all but over. “Even war has rules”, said executive director Jason Cone. The insurgents, who have been massing around the city for months, launched a multi-pronged attack that took authorities by surprise.
