President Obama Tells Jon Stewart: ‘I’m Sure the Republicans Are Enjoying Mr
DUTHIERS: It was almost ten years ago that then-Senator Obama appeared Stewart’s nightly talk show. “We don’t score a touchdown every time, but we move the ball forward”.
First, the President has used comedy to reach out to Americans in nontraditional ways, such as when he showed his straight-faced comic timing in an appearance on amusing or Die’s “Between Two Ferns” to sell Obamacare to younger people.
The Prez came out to Thunderous applause (yes with a capital T) and charmed the audience saying, “I can’t believe that you’re leaving before me” to Stewart. Stewart as you know is retiring next month after more than 16 years as host. Perhaps highest among them is President Barack Obama, who appeared on the Daily Show Tuesday.
Stewart spent most of the 20 minute interview broaching problems and strategies in the Middle East, notably the Iran nuclear deal.
“Boy, you really do have only a year left”, Stewart interjected. “Sheldon would have been better off offering me $100 million to drop out of the race”. Number one, government works better now than it probably ever has given what we ask it to do.
The Christian Science Monitor reports that Obama also took time on Tuesday’s Daily Show to lament the country’s inability to come together and discuss complicated issues. He recalled the sky-high expectations that awaited him when he was elected after a campaign in which his face was etched across the country on posters bearing the word “Hope“.
Stewart started the conversation by poking fun at liberal media bias: “You love ’em”.
OBAMA: Or if you had brought Dick Cheney into the negotiations.
But Stewart hasn’t hesitated to grill Obama in the past. I’m going to issue an executive order.
Stewart wraps up the interview by asking Obama if he has any advice for future-President Trump.
Obama says with a smirk, “I’m sure the Republicans are enjoying Mr. Trump’s dominance of their primary”.
“They’re an adversary. They’re anti-American, anti-Israel, they sponsor terrorist organizations like Hezbollah”, Obama acknowledged, adding “You don’t make peace with your friends”. The Daily Show host suggested mandatory national service might be a way to create a sense of “shared sacrifice”.
