President Obama to address nation from Oval Office
Tom Cotton (R-AR), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, said after his Sunday night address, expressed his concerns about President Barack Obama’s leadership in taking on the Islamic State and what that might mean to the security of Americans.
Despite the rash of violence, Obama argued his strategy is appropriate for what he dubbed a “new phase” of terrorism.
“If I am elected President, I will direct the Department of Defense to destroy ISIS”.
During the course of the near quarter-hour address, Obama outlined the most important goals of the United States in the campaign against IS, though offered very little explanation as to how such goals would be achieved. But so far Republican lawmakers who control the legislative branch have refused to do so while at the same time critiquing Obama for being soft on terrorism.
The shooting in San Bernardino, California, left 14 dead and has once-again rekindled debate and fear over terrorism in the United States. A married couple, who might have been inspired by Islamic State, shot and killed 14 people and wounded 21 in the Southern California city of San Bernardino.
Obama said in his speech that the USA “will destroy Daesh and any other organization that tries to harm us”.
“What we can do – and must do – is make it harder for them to kill”.
“It is clear that the two of them had gone down the dark path of radicalisation, embracing a perverted interpretation of Islam that calls for war against America and the West”, Obama said.
“Let us not forget what makes us exceptional, let us not forget that freedom is more powerful than fear”, the president said. Gun-rights advocates say that violates the rights of people who haven’t been convicted of a crime.
First, he said, the nation must avoid “a long and costly ground war”.
The Guardian reported that the president has also defended his existing strategy of fighting against the Islamic State as critics urge for more military action in Syria. One of the shooters, Tashfeen Malik, pledged her allegiance to ISIS on Facebook just before the attack, according to law enforcement. He notably called on Muslim leaders to confront extremist ideology “without excuse”. ISIL does not speak for Islam.
He also said the U.S. must make it harder for potential attackers to obtain guns.
“Where is the evidence that we have widespread discrimination against Muslims?” he said.
Huizenga said that was worth talking about, but that the president needs a new plan. And Americans wanted some reassurance. Specifically, he called on Congress to prohibit people on the no-fly list from buying guns. Authorities are investigating the incident as a terrorist attack. This was especially important with the recent anti-Islamic speech and the offensive commentary from Republican Presidential candidates.
But Obama, whose restraint varied sharply with French President Francois Hollande’s impassioned words after the Paris strikes when he vowed a “merciless” reply, said there was no signs the California assault was directed by a militant group global or part of a broader conspiracy at home.
