President Trump says he’ll keep funding Planned Parenthood… if abortion goes
Malloy said CT funds Planned Parenthood services here for 30,000 of its patients through Medicaid and Husky. This comes after Rokita co-sponsored a bill that aims to strip federal funding from Planned Parenthood.
“I was a volunteer [at Planned Parenthood] in the 70s when I was at Cornell”, Jacobson said. “That’s why Governor Malloy felt strongly it was important to include a provision in his budget to address a shortfall should federal dollars be restricted”.
Because of the discriminatory Hyde Amendment, federal dollars did not go towards abortion services before this bill, and they won’t after.
If you share my concerns, please consider contacting your senators and congressional representatives to ask that they withhold support for this proposed – and deficient – alternative to the Affordable Care Act.
No doubt the White House understands it’s between a rock and a hard place in trying to satisfy the GOP’s conservative base by living up to its campaign promises while most Americans are opposed to stripping Planned Parenthood of federal funding.
In a not-so-subtle political play, President Trump offered a deal to Planned Parenthood on Monday, following the release of details of the ACA replacement proposal that would defund the organization if it passed. We don’t need to go back to those risky, bloody hanger days.
But Washington County legislators – all Republicans – said paying for a group that provides abortions should not be a function of state government.
In Massachusetts, Republican Gov. Charlie Baker has taken a similar approach to Malloy, saying he’s prepared to use state funds to make up for a cut of about $2 million. With the repeal of Obamacare in the works, low-income Americans, minority communities, LGBT people, and young women will be more reliant than ever on organizations like Planned Parenthood. Trump also said past year Planned Parenthood serves many important functions and does “very good work for millions of women” but should no longer provide abortions.
The notion has been roundly rejected by Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards. Seven dollars apiece from nearly 91 million people gives Planned Parenthood about $636 million to work with.
For the last 47 years-since the Nixon administration-Planned Parenthood has received federal funding to support its services like breast cancer screenings, pap smears, contraception, STD screenings, and pregnancy testing and family planning.
It might come as a surprise to Senator Dan Sullivan that most women who use the services provided by Planned Parenthood Health Centers do so because they need low-priced care and have nowhere else to turn.
