President Trump says Korean peace talks have his blessing
Last September, Abe penned an opinion piece in the New York Times-just following Trump’s blunt warning to North Korea at the United Nations General Assembly meeting-stressing the need for such a firm approach: “Considering (North Korea’s) history and its continuing missile launches and nuclear tests, more dialogue with North Korea would be a dead end”.
Trump said on Tuesday he backed efforts between North and South Korea aimed at ending the state of war that has existed between their countries for so long. “We’ll iron those out, hopefully”.
A meeting between North Korea’s Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in is expected in next week.
“Even though our special envoys confirmed his denuclearisation will, it is entirely different if the two leaders confirm it directly among themselves and put that into text”, Im said.
While the USA has exempted some countries from the tariffs, it has not done so in the case of Japan – meaning that the prospect of a global trade war will make Tokyo understandably nervous.
The newspaper said it had received the information from two well-informed people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the highly classified nature of the talks. President Trump has called out Japan and its trade practices.
But while Trump’s sudden push for high-level engagement with the North carries deep risks for Japan, there are also some opportunities.
Abe added that he will raise the issue of Japanese abductees held in North Korea, calling it “a priority issue for Japan”.
The U.S. itself is pushing for the release of three Americans. Now Abe must be anxious that America could be going too far, too fast, in trying to achieve some sort of agreement with the North.
The economic adviser also said that “there’s nothing at all concrete” yet on a possible US return to what was the 12-nation Trans-Pacific Partnership.
“We’re going to sneak out tomorrow morning and play a round of golf if possible, if we have the time”, Trump told reporters shortly after Abe arrived at Mar-a-Lago Tuesday afternoon. “But it’s a great chance to solve a world problem”.
Most other key US allies, including Australia, Canada, the European Union, and Mexico have been granted exemptions to the protectionist measures, which went into effect last month.
“As you remember, we were here and President Xi of China was here”.
The news of his visit came after President Trump appeared to say he had met Mr Kim in remarks that were later clarified by White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders.

“North Korea is coming along”, Mr. Trump said. In March, Trump excluded six countries, including Canada and Mexico, from those USA import duties, but not Japan. In Japan, Abe is accused of giving his friends preferential treatment and of bureaucrats reportedly doctoring documents to cover it up.
“This is a very important meeting, a lot of really key issues are on the line”, said Larry Kudlow, Trump’s top economic advisor.
“We have not picked a site yet, but we’ve picked five sites where it’s potentially going to be”.
“U.S. -Japan relations have moved beyond the initial honeymoon period based on seemingly friendly personal relationship between Trump and Abe”, Tatsumi said.
