President Trump Visits Michigan to Discuss Job Creation
The Massachusetts Democrat, who sits on the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, spoke out against the proposed rollback shortly before President Donald Trump was expected to direct the Environmental Protection Agency to reconsider its conclusion that auto makers could meet the strict limits on greenhouse gas emissions.
The automakers also charged the Obama administration with unfairly rushing the latest rules into place weeks before Trump was to take office, even though the deadline for finalizing them was not until 2018. That regulation also required that the EPA undertake a midterm review of the program to determine if those standards should be revised.
“They’re going to be building new plants”, Trump said. “We’re going to be fair”.
At the Willow Run Airport, there’s a lot of work being done on safety technology, but what most expect the president to speak about specifically is a new review of federal auto fuel economy and emissions rules.
Donald Trump, the current POTUS, will announce the results of the review, and some experts in the field believe that a new set of standards will be proposed.
A new poll has found that 42 percent of Americans believe that the country is heading in the “right direction”, up 15 percent from previous year. “Jail time!” Trump wrote. Instead, they have pitched their new review as one created to fulfill the government’s agreement with auto manufacturers. The group’s request came last month, after the confirmation of Scott Pruitt as EPA administrator. On Wednesday, an alliance of 1,000 United States companies took out ads in Washington DC publications to urge Trump to stay in the deal and work towards a low-carbon economy. So Trump’s plan, according an anonymous White House official quoted by NPR, is to replace them with “standards that are technologically feasible, economically feasible and allow the auto industry to grow and create jobs”.
Auto industry CEOs wrote Trump a letter in February that asked him to reinstate the April 2018 finalization schedule.
President Trump will visit MI on Wednesday to discuss job creation and manufacturing with automaker executives. “Unfortunately, today’s order is a green light to keep making cars that dirty our air, endanger our health and threaten our children’s future”. The move is a victory for carmakers who have claimed the standards are too onerous and out of step with Americans’ auto buying habits.
Simply reviving the review does not mean any changes to the regulations will be made, but the Trump administration has taken steps to dismantle former president Barack Obama’s other climate change initiatives.
Trump will make the announcement Wednesday during a visit with automakers in Detroit.
