Pressure mounts on Paul Ryan to run for House speaker
“Now if new candidates declare themselves, we’re going to ask them to come talk to the House Freedom Caucus, because it’s not about the who“.
A North Carolina congresswoman thanked fellow Republicans for their support Friday after many received incendiary emails alleging an affair between her and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, according to two Republicans in the closed-door meeting. He, along with those who are not Webster, would not get the votes of the Freedom Caucus.
“He’s got a hard decision to make, and most folks” are waiting on his decision before they take any steps, Conaway added.
He said that only one of the 33 witnesses the committee interviewed since March has focused on the question of whether Clinton improperly used a private email server for government purposes.
There is an easy solution to this problem, Welch says, “that is to go back to the good old fashioned compromise and cooperation”.
Party elders, conservative leaders and Republican colleagues have been pressuring Ryan, 45, who was Romney’s vice presidential running mate in 2012, saying he should run for the good of the country, to rescue the institution of Congress and to protect the political interests of Republicans overall.
“I think Paul should be very cautious”, Mr. Gingrich said on “Fox News Sunday”.
A few veteran lawmakers thought Ryan could still change his mind.
Trump weighed in on the race for House Speaker on Twitter Saturday morning: “Paul Ryan is far from my first choice, but a very nice guy”.

It’s not really a surprise to people who follow politics closely that Congressman Lynn Westmoreland is considering a run for Speaker of the House.
Even Utah’s Jason Chaffetz – who is running for speaker himself – said he’d prefer Ryan. He has said repeatedly he doesn’t want the job, but is said to be thinking about it.
To un-stick the House from the muck of intractable conflict, Ryan would have to make deals with members of both parties on raising the debt ceiling, passing a budget and more, said one Republican who supports him. At the same time, I agree with the vast majority of members, I think.
“I think you’re having a breakdown of law and order in the House that will be repaired fairly soon”, Graham said.
“There’s a group here that’s been empowered and emboldened and it is on the Republican side that feels entitled to shut the government down and default on our obligations if they don’t get their way”, Welch said.
