‘Pride & Prejudice & Zombies’ offers new twist to classic story
Yet like Grahame-Smith’s clever revamping, the movie is remarkably faithful to Austen’s text. That is exactly what I would expect of anyone who plays Mr. Darcy but Riley gives it even more since he has to fight the zombie herd of London!
“Pride and Prejudice and Zombies” is a fresh twist on Jane Austen’s classic novel, based on the best-seller by Seth Grahame-Smith. And Liz and Lady Catherine are respected allies rather than enemies, as I always wished could have been the case in Austen’s original work. “No feminism has been added to the book that wasn’t there in the original”, he says.
The invaluable Charles Dance adds a dignified presence as the doting father of the five sisters; Sally Phillips is a comedic hoot as their disgusting mother, who is obsessed with marrying them off to men of means. While for most a good match would be a gentleman in good social standing with enough wealth to support a wife, Elizabeth is looking for a man who shares her interests and will allow her to continue her studies in zombie annihilation. They’re trained warriors who can and do protect their homestead. “Your balls, Mr. Darcy?” Not only are the Bennetts on a lower tier than many of their neighbors, but Elizabeth is mocked for training in China instead of Japan. She laughingly refuses. Wickham tells Liz that Bingley left town and Jane because Darcy told him she was just a gold digger.
So yes, check out Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, whenever it comes to streaming video. From the second he arrives in the Bennet household, he steals every scene with his foppish mannerisms and impeccable comedic timing. But even in more conventional adaptations of Pride and Prejudice, it’s ultimately all about Elizabeth and Darcy, each richly imbued with both prejudices and pride. This movie is not for you! One such wealthy gentleman is Mr. Darcy, played by Sam Riley, for whom Elizabeth has admiration from afar. It’s as confusing as it is controversial, coming as it does after she so completely demonstrates her independence. So, in a very different way, are the zombie films of George A Romero. There are two ways this movie could have gone: Either just go full-bore on the insane comedy, and send itself up utterly, or really try to figure out a way to integrate the zombies into Austen’s story without breaking it. The movie tries for the latter, but does actually break Austen’s story, without creating anything compelling-maybe because there’s not that much understanding of what makes Austen work, or of the elements of a successful zombie tale. Steers’ film, though, rejects that ambiguity outright: The climactic battle sees Lizzie and her sister Jane leading the charge in the film’s largest battle against the zombies. Heathcote said that she still retains the character’s “shyness” so that the relationship between them can build. This time around, the women are the agents of their own destinies.
“The laws of the universe are slightly heightened and the characters that exist in it can therefore be slightly heightened, I think”, Smith said.
In the subsequent years since the book was a hit, mashup ideas have come and gone. When I wrote, ‘Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, ‘ on its surface, it was a very ridiculous proposition. Sure, characters get dismembered and torn apart, but there isnt anything near as graphic as anything youd see on any given episode of The Walking Dead.
Here’s 8News’ weekly look at what’s new at the box office. Eventually, in the final act, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES does become a full-blown action/horror film, and Steers more successfully integrates the key moments of Austen’s fiction into the ghoul mayhem than vice versa. And more brilliant Oscar nominees are on display in a program featuring the across-the-board-fantastic 2016 Oscar Nominated Short Films – Animated. This is no Snakes on a Plane. But something about the movie’s Regency-era ladies arming themselves under their Empire waist gowns feels bracing and liberating.
