Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday inaugurated Making of Constitution
Describing the Constitution as a “social document” which is ideal, he said there should be maximum propagation about it among the masses as its provisions are the “marg darshak” (guide).
The constituition in iteself may be bad, but if the people implementing it are good, then the constituition becomes good itself. The parliament opened yesterday for a month-long winter session that promises to be stormy. Excerpts: On the occasion of Samvidhan Vivas (Constitution Day), there were about 1.25 lakh school children and citizens present at Yashwant Stadium here in the city on Thursday morning, and the Preamble of Constitution was collectively read out by all.
On the morning of 26 November 1949, when the constitution was formally adopted, Dr. Rajendra Prasad complimented Dr. BR Ambedkar by saying that there could not have been a better chief for constituition assembly.
He also objected to former external affairs minister Salman Khurshid’s remarks during a lecture at the Jinnah Institute in Islamabad that India didn’t reciprocate well to Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif with regard to a lasting peace deal.
The comments by Singh were viewed as an apparent response to actor Aamir Khan’s statement that his wife did not feel safe for their child and had also thought of leaving the country.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his speech following the Constitution debate on Friday, 27 November, said that there was no question of the Indian Constitution being reviewed. Owaisi said that India’s multi-culturalism is under danger from BJP.
“But he never said I have faced discrimination in India, so I will go somewhere else”, Rajnath Singh said, to which some Congress members objected.
Underlining an all-embracing character of the Constitution, the Prime Minster said the charter had the power to bind people with the diverse cultures in the country. “The words “socialist” and “secular” were incorporated in the Preamble through the 42nd Amendment to the Constitution”.
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge, speaking briefly after Modi, sought to “set the record straight”. Singh, however, said Amedkar felt that secularism was in the basic nature of Indians and there was no need to mention it separately.
“In today’s politics, if a word has been misused the maximum, it is secular”, Singh said. “Because of the rampant misuse of the word, there have been instances of tension in the society”.
Eminent poet Ashok Vajpeyi too lambasted the ruling party, saying it only has “dishonoured” the word most and said it to be replaced with “sarv dharma sambhav” (broadly meaning equality of all religions).
Naidu also said Ambedkar favoured inter-linking of rivers.
