‘Princess Diaries’ Star Anne Hathaway On Garry Marshall’s Death
Garry Marshall, director of Pretty Women and creator of beloved sitcom Happy Days, has passed away.
This interview covers Marshall’s entire career, from his early days in NY to his work in television and film, including in-depth looks at the process of creating film and television.
His movie career began in 1967 with the movie “How Sweet It Is” starring James Garner and Debbie Reynolds.
Marshall worked with Hawn and her longtime partner Kurt Russell on 1987 film Overboard, and the actress’ daughter, Mother’s Day star Kate Hudson, has also marked the loss online, insisting, “He was more than my director, he was family”. But the two men kept their hand in TV. The show, starring Jack Klugman and Tony Randall, received Emmy nominations and wins for the comedy series based on Neil Simon’s play about two divorced men with different lifestyles who are forced to share an apartment.
Other stars, including former “Happy Days” stars Ron Howard and Winkler, joined in recognizing Marshall on social media.
“Critics have knocked me for targeting society’s lowest common denominator”, he wrote.
Penny Marshall told The New York Times in 2001 that her brother “has a life”.
After cranking out what Marshall once estimated to be 1,000 sitcom episodes, he switched his focus to the big screen with 1984’s “The Flamingo Kid”, a coming-of-age story starring Matt Dillon, which Marshall wrote and directed. Great television was not Garry Marshall’s only contribution to the entertainment world.Garry throughout his life has also spent many years working behind the camera bringing us film hits such as “A League of Their Own”, “Hocus Pocus” and “Pretty Woman”.
It may be hard to remember at this point, given how much she’s accomplished over the past decade, but Hathaway’s career was launched in the 2001 film The Princess Diaries, which was directed by Marshall. “I was with Anne Hathaway a couple weeks ago, it looks like we want to do Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan”, he said to People magazine.
Garry is survived by his wife, Barbara, and their three children.
His funeral will be private however a memorial will take place in Garry’s honor on his birthday – November 13th.
