Probe opens into French restaurateur’s anti-Muslim tirade
“Racists don’t plant bombs and don’t kill people”, the owner of Le Cénacle restaurant, which is in Tremblay-en-France, responded.
He further said, “Madam, terrorists are Muslims and all Muslims are terrorists. This sentence says it all, analyze it”, says the man in the video.
When the duo objected to his claims, he fought back.
And much like the recent burkini bans, opinion in the country is divided between those who see the laws as an infringement on religious freedom, and those who view the Islamic dress as inconsistent with France’s rigorously enforced secularism.
A woman wearing a “Burkini” joins a protest outside the French Embassy in London on August 25, 2016, during a “Wear what you want beach party” to demonstrate against the ban on Burkinis on French beaches and to show solidarity with Muslim women. “You are imposing yourself here”.
One of the women, who sounds clearly emotional replied, “We don’t want to be served by racists”. The first hearing – regarding Frejus – is set to take place on Tuesday at the administrative court of Toulon.
Government Minister Laurence Rossignol said she had asked Dilcra – a government anti-racism body – to investigate, describing the behaviour as “intolerable”.
The extremely disrespectful treatment of the two women has sparked outrage and condemnation across France.
The owner of the restaurant has publicly apologised.
The boss of “Le Cenacle” restaurant later apologized for his actions as calls to boycott his establishment flooded social media sites alongside negative reviews. He said he had “got out of hand” due to the current tensions around regarding burkinis on French beaches.
“The things I said I don’t really think them”. The Committee Against Islamophobia in France also issued a statement supporting the two women and pledging to provide them with “emotional and legal support”.
The row comes amid an ongoing national debate about the wearing of the burqini.
“We are not at war with Islam. the French republic is welcoming (to Muslims), we are protecting them against discrimination”, he told BFMTV.
A court in the Riviera resort of Nice upheld the ban this week.
President Francois Hollande also came out last week to warn against “stigmatization” of Muslims, along with other politicians.
