Project M Officially Complete, Team Disbands
In a letter to fans, the development team expressed their desire to let Project M go out on a high note, rather than dwindle on for years and years.
“It’s been an excruciating call to make, but it’s been made a bit easier by our satisfaction with the previous and final release, v3.6”, read the message. E3, a trade show for computer and video games, draws professionals to experience the future of interactive entertainment as well as to see new technologies and never-before-seen products.
Cloud and Midgar do not have an official release date yet, but fans believe it will be revealed in this month’s Nintendo Direct. Fans also speculate that this Nintendo Direct will feature information regarding the Fan Ballot, an open ballot that allowed people to vote for characters they wanted to appear as DLC in Super Smash Bros Wii U/ 3DS.
Ryan Morrison, who is the attorney who represents the Project M developers and was the only contact listed in the team’s farewell announcement, stated that Nintendo had nothing to do with the decision to shut the project down.
“We can’t spill the beans just yet, but know that we’re looking towards a fresh start with brand new designs”, they said.
First released in February 2011, Project M has been especially popular in the competitive Smash Bros community, with numerous tournaments choosing to use Project M rather than one of the un-modified Smash Bros games. In part of how the game stayed on Nintendo’s good side, the team made it a mandate to not add any characters or elements that weren’t already in Brawl (i.e. fighters, trophies, etc). Brawl that bared more similarities to its more competitive-focused predecessor, Super Smash Bros.
